Last August, a young man was shot and killed in Boise, Idaho. The victim – 22-year old Robert Eugene Skinner was a student at Boise State. He was also a member of the school’s varsity hockey team.
He was at his home on Belmont Street in Boise last August. Nobody is quite sure what happened next, but a call was made to police that Skinner had shot himself. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at his home. The report initially stated that the victim had shot himself in the neck.
After conducting their investigation, the Ada County Sheriff’s Department realized that the gunshot was not self-inflicted. After talking to witnesses and investigating the scene, the police issued an arrest warrant for a young man named Kyle Kelly.
Kelly was a 21-year old man from Hampton Bays, New York. Like Skinner, he was also a student at Boise State. The arrest warrant charged Kelly with involuntary felony manslaughter. There were no report of exactly what information the police uncovered to show that Kelly was responsible for the young man’s death.
Kelly finally turned himself into the Ada County Sheriff’s Office this week. He has been placed in jail with a $500,000 bond. He has not released a statement at this time. However, the evidence suggests that Kelly shot Skinner in the neck. There is no indication that this was an intentional act. This is why the suspect has not been charged with murder.
If he is found guilty, Kelly will be facing serious penalties. A manslaughter conviction, even if not intentional, carries a long jail sentence. It is not yet clear how the defendant intends to plea.
